The Write Women Book Fest Presents: “Playing With Poetry Workshop”

Join me and J. L. Smith for this self paced virtual workshop where you will have the chance to “play” with poetry by learning how to create your own poem using the “Black Out Poetry” technique and then review classic and contemporary works by Maryland poets and create and share a response. Using the creative and playful techniques provided, the novice as well as the seasoned poet will have a foundation for creating their own works. In the end, everyone will have an opportunity to share their works they created in response.

This workshop is a part of 2020 The Write Women Book Fest. The festival was held virtually this year and will be offered an array of virtual workshops on a variety of platforms from September 21-26, 2020. Presentations, readings, and panels covered a variety of literary topics by women authors, poets and writers. About the Presenters:

Sharon J. Burton is a visual artist, art curator, and creative life advisor based in the Washington, DC area. Her preferred art medium is collage and mixed media and has exhibited her art in galleries, art venues and other settings across the country since 2007. As a pre-teen and teenager, she wrote song lyrics and poetry to express her feelings about life and love while growing up in a small town in Upstate New York. It has always been a dream to write poetry as an adult but did not start until 2012. In 2018 and 2019 she found herself writing 35 poems which resulted in self-publishing her first chapbook, “Moon Rising in Capricorn.”When she is not working or creating, you can find her hiking in the forests along the East Coast or indulging in Artist’s Dates to museums, cafes and other artistic haunts around the Washington, DC area.

JL Smith

JL Smith has published over 90 individual works of poetry, fiction and nonfiction in various literary journals and magazines. In 2017, she published her first book of poetry, a series of narrative poems on myth of Medusa entitled Medusa, The Lost Daughter. Over the next couple of years, she would publish two more poetry collections, Weathered Fragments, Weathered Souls and Cast out of Eden, as well as a cookbook, Cooking with the Smiths.She received her bachelor’s degree in English/Creative Writing from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, enjoying classes with the Jon Tribble, Katherine Riegel, Kent Haruf, among others.In addition to helping students in their academic endeavors as an academic advisor with a Maryland university, she also uses her life coaching skills to help writers in their creative goals.
